the nanoswarm
era the newly awakened AI GodGAIA managed to save the bulk of the terragenbiosphere,
but then decided that, apart from a small number of helpers, humanity had to
go in order that the biosphere
be fully restored to its pristine state.
The result was the Great Expulsion, where several billion terran survivors of
the nanoswarms
were sent into exile in crowded ships and habitats.
