A two-dimensional defect, a boundary between two mis-oriented crystallites in polycrystal, having a thickness of order of 6 5 x 10-10 m. GB structure is characterized by lower atom density than adjacent grains and depends on grain misorientation. GB is a high diffusivity path compared to the bulk of adjacent grains.
