state of matter which is in between a liquid and a
crystalline solid, which can be observed for rod-like shaped molecules with a weak interaction. In a real crystal the position of every single building block
or molecule
is fixed on a lattice
(correlation of the position), whereas in a liquid crystal
the orientation of adjacent molecules
is correlated.
