To improve miscibility with other polymer matrices, one must convert the normally hydrophilic silicate surface to organophilic, which makes possible intercalation of many engineering polymers. Generally, this can be done by ion-exchange reactions with cationic surfactants including primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary alkyl ammonium or alkylphosphonium cations.
