Photonic crystal

A material with periodic gaps or variations in the dielectric constant in the range of the wavelength of light. The propagation of light of a certain wavelengths is forbidden resulting in a photonic band gap, resembling the electrical properties of a semiconductor. Photonic crystals can be used as sensors, as light ducts or as optical switches in data communication.
