Surface Science

A branch of solid state (condensed matter) physics bordering with chemistry. Surface science deals with processes occurring on the surfaces of materials and properties of surfaces. Many techniques of nanoscience and nanotechnology were first created or further developed by surface scientists (atomic force microscope, scanning tunneling microscope, ultra-high vacuum equipment...). Sometimes a term surface nanotechnology is used.
